Based on a novel by Shauna Cross, who also wrote the screenplay, I will not
pretend that I know who she is.
The novel is called Derby Girl. I haven't been able to find it seeing as I live in
the south of France, and it's not easy to come by. I do not know what the book is
The movie on the other hand. Drew Barrymoore's directorial debut was in my opinion,
a hit. She is in it, but she isn't one of those directors who gives herself a title role
in the movie that she is working on. I am not a fan of Ellen Page, I have seen Juno, and I thought is was good, but I guess it didn't live up to my expectations, I saw it after the Oscar win, and all of that great buzz I guess I was expecting something amazing. And I saw something good, witty, but not amazing.
I think that Ellen page is quite overrated, not a bad actress, but a bit overrated. Again.
This is nothing but my opinion. But I guess she was okay for the part, I don't know who else I would have cast in the lead role as Bliss, but I don't think it would have been her.
Landon Pigg (Unfortunate name, yes). Who is first and foremost a musician. Never heard
of him before he was cast as Ellen Page's love interest, Oliver,I liked him.
I think everyone else was well cast, this movie made me quite the fan of Kristen Wiig and got me in touch with my new found love for the forgotten Wilson brother, Andrew, who plays Razor, the lovable roller derby coach of the underdog team "The Hurl Scouts" who never win but don't really give two shits.
But I think I am getting ahead of myself. I am talking about all of this and not really talking about what the movie is about. For those of you who haven't seen it, Misfit teenager Bliss, that seems to have only one friend, Pash, both of whom work at some kind of typical southern diner. Bliss stumbles on a roller derby flyer, lies to her parents. Her and Pash make their way to go watch. Bliss has found her new calling. There is a love interest, at some point things go wrong then they get better, la dee da, everyone is happy. I mean everything that happens in the middle is good, I am just not going to sit here and type it all. Good actors, (Alia Shawkat who plays Pash, is great, pretty, funny, you get a feeling that her and Page are really great friends).
Wonderful soundtrack, funny, witty, entertains, good cast & crew.
For her first time Drew Barrymoore really did something great.
If you haven't seen it, do so. If you have, well watch it again. And again.
